The Biddeford Mill Clock Tower: A Community Story
July 10 @ 7:00 pm
Her ghostly presence is with us. She sits in the Lincoln Mill parking lot awaiting the last wave of Biddeford to preserve her, restore her and raise her to a place of honor in our community. She is an iconic symbol of Biddeford’s industrialization. She was the mother of all of the clocks in our city. She was the clock that all others timed their clocks to. She and she alone timed mill life. She is still here because of the waves of people that worked to keep her with us. Biddeford High School students, organizations and Biddeford, Saco and Portland citizens, all helped to keep her going and keep her here.
Join us as we explore the rich history of this Biddeford icon from its creation in 1853 to its architectural destruction in 2007. Learn about its unique eight-sided construction, the workings of the clock and the massive bell. Discover the prominent Biddeford citizens and inventors who wound the clock. Hear first-hand from the members of the Friends of the Historic Biddeford Mill Clock Tower on what you can do to raise this clock tower on the Riverwalk in 2021.
